Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

Wireless vs wireline

I'm reading all the posts about wireless being walked out and let go and immediately having to leave (which I am genuinely sorry to see ANYONE lose their job). But in wireline the managers are given 30 days in which they can continue working and/or look for another position within the company, or work from home. I imagine it's a long shot to find a new position at this point, but I was surprised that everyone in wireless is being walked out. Do you not have the 30 day gig that wireline has?

Wireless network received no warning since those employees have the ability to log into network tools, change code, and cause problems. If one was told he/she's last day is next week, they can access tools to cause outages left and right.

919 ~ that makes sense and I hadn't thought about the different state laws involved and requirements of each. Thanks for the input.

Hi. I don't work for Verizon but have worked in related companies and have seen companies go through many lay-offs. The reason you are seeing differences in procedure and in the number of days on payroll/if required to actually work them, optional, etc is that state employment laws vary. For example, I worked for Sun Microsystems during a period of layoffs and while the company did a phenomenal job trying to make the process as painless as possible, offered very generous severance and six months free professional outsourced assistance with resumes, job searches, interviewing help etc, they could not entirely standardize what they offered because their campuses were located in 3 states with different employment laws (Colorado, California, Massachusetts).

Telematics (Atlanta) was given 30 days...11/20/15

People get walked if they are on disciplinary for any reason. Through three layoffs, if you get a severance option, you get walked and do not get the opportunity to take any of your stuff. If you are not on disciplinary, you can apply for another position.

Wireline mgmt gives all access including computer etc for 30 days. They can continue to work and transition their work if they wish to do so. They can apply for internal jobs. But most chose not to come to office. But they keep their phone and laptop until 30 days and work with the benifit team etc. They can come back as a contractor after 6 months. If they become employee again their service will be bridged.

In California all VZW employees were given 60 days. Dec 31st is their last day. However, VZW network employees will continue to collect a paycheck until Dec 31st as their last official day of employment, even though they were instructed to not return.

The way wireline works is you stop doing your job right then and there and your new job is to find a job within 30 days or be without a job. They give them an off payroll date and that is that; new job within they company by that date or gone.

Wireline is notified and given an off-payroll date 30 days out. On notification day, a manager is given the option of going home for the day to re-group. Because for legal purposes a business case must be written for each RIFd employee, it is generally 2 to 3 weeks between directors knowing their RIF number and the actual notification date. As such. Managers usually find out if they are on the list. Very few are surprised. The 30 days is transition time - handing off work and completing exit activity including managing paper work for record retention, completing outstanding expense reports, etc. Keep in mind Vzw culture is much, much different than the CORE which has all the Bell culture merged. From experience (VzW hired employees moving to CORE after indoctrination with VzW and working with these employees), VzW employees are not autonomous and there is not a culture to learn other roles etc. Hard to explain, but my sense is CORE Managers are more involved in and aware of organizational models. Wireless...it is as if employees are like union-represented employees on the CORE - but of course without Union.

Everybody gets 30 days from official (with package info) notification. There are times when someone may go immediately but get their pay for interim period plus package but it's unusual. Timing is standard between wireless and wireline.

Wireline has always gotten 30 days. The only time they don't is if they are being fired.

I have seen it back in Alltel days whole floors let go with security herding them out. They were not able to get their coats or anything. No notice at all. The only way they got their stuff back is to find someone still employed that had access to that area that could pick it up and give it to them.

Makes me lose pride in the company I work for.

That's ridiculous and seems highly disrespectful. How can anyone have respect for a company that is treating people this way?

I work for wireless and witnessed today a coworker let go during a training class he traveled to in a rental car with another coworker. After he was let go a car service was called to drive him 4 hours back to his home. WOW

I don't think that's accurate. I've seen several 1st level managers get RIF'd and they were relieved of their duties immediately.
