Share your stories on Job scam and being phished experience

Now that the oil price has been inching up for the last few weeks, I have friends who were laid off for a year, 2 years, >2 years telling me stories of receiving some possible scam email/phone calls and phising incident.

For me, I am a 52 years old engineer being laid off for 2 and half years despairing landing a job back in the oil industry. I had my mortgage to pay, 2 children to support in college, a dog, a cat, a car payment to take care of, along with the food bills and medical insurance. I jumped on any chance when there is a glimmer of hope.

Out of the blue, I received an unknown phone number text message that say "Hello John, remember me? Are you still in New Orleans, I got a job for you."

I replied, "I am sorry, I dont recognized your phone number, What is your name and what is that job opportunity you can shed some light on?"

To cut a long story short..... no one pick up the phone when I call, but after a few text message exchanges that I realized it was a scam. So I stop playing his game.

Would you share your experience for scum who prey on those who were in these destitute time?

-1ton: Hard question to answer in general, as recruiter quality varies so widely even within the same company. The key is to find folks that understand your particular skill area. Start by looking at who is soliciting for jobs that you would qualify for (commonly in my field the hiring company is blind, so focus on the recruiter). Apply for that specific job, but also call (or visit in person) the recruiter who is leading that job search...give him, or her, your particulars and also chat them up to see if they have any clue or are a dip sh--. The keen ones are obviously! They want to fill jobs...you want to get one. They are as frustrated as you by this downturn. Find a win-win, but do not get married... many companies playing the recruiters right now... so be a free agent. Good luck!

-1dty: I hear your pain, but that was not a “scam” in the same sense as the OP was suggesting. Rather it is how the game is played. The recruiter promised to find reasonable candidates for a job search (even though they apparently were not the best at triage)... they got you some face time. So that was a real lead! I went to a lot of interviews arranged by different recruiters before I got an offer. More then once I got to an interview only to find they were looking for someone completely different than me...they wanted an exploration advisor whereas I focus on advanced reservoir characterization. I wanted to say “why the hell did you not say that more clearly in your solicitation” and why did my a--hole recruiter send me to waste my day here when I could have been sitting in my pj’s drinking beer (again). Needless to say, never said that out loud. The point is things are slowly coming back, there are starting to be more opportunities. Try to find a few good recruiters and play the game. Most of the time it might be s waste of effort, but you only need one yes to succeed?
