Thread regarding Microchip Technology Inc. layoffs

2016 Layoff at Microchip Technology

Microchip used to be a good company to work for. Within the last few years there appears to have been a change in philosophy . As of this week, there have been four individuals laid off between the Chandler and Tempe Arizona sites. All individuals were over the age of 55 and had been with the company between approximately 10 and 20+ years. I have heard that Gresham, Oregon has also experienced layoffs this week.

MICROCHIP -ATMEL LAID OFF ATMEL Sr. Maneagment Design Engineers,THESE ARE PATENT PRODUCING ENGINEERS THAT WHERE OVER 55 + YEARS OLD .. LOOKS LIKE AGE DISCRIMINATION. BUT TO HARD TO PROVE BECAUSE MICROCHIP HAS DEEP POCKETS SOME OF THE SENIOR ENGINEERS HAD DESINGED PATENTS FOR ATMEL IN THE LAST YEAR GETTING TOKEN BONUS ONLY TO BE LET GO BY MICROCHIP ALL OVER 55+ YEARS OLD. WHY WOULD THEY GET RID OF THIS LEVEL OFF EMPLOYEE MONEY ??????

Good employee that where producing patents for Atmel, But where over 55 where let go If they are engineers Designing patents for the company How can you say they are underpreformers, WHEN THE ONLY CRIME IS BEING OVER 55 YEARS OLDS WHITH PATENT AT PREVIOUS EMPLOYERS SUCH AS AMD, TDK, ECT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yess emplyee that where over 55 laid off I know of an Emplyee that had produced atleast patents inthe last 3years !!! Does this sound like on underperformer ?????

They are quietly cleaning up Atmel San Jose. Approximately 20 IC designers were laid off today. A few days ago it was 7 test engineers. The parking lot is empty.

I personally knew some of the affected people. They were NOT underperformers. They just happened to be in an older age group who had all been at the company for many years and were making a higher salary commensurate with their experience and longevity within the company. It was made clear to me that there were no performance issues on my part at any time during my tenure.

Many of us have noticed a change in the corporate culture and attitude toward employees as more and more acquisitions of other companies are made. In my opinion, this has created a feeling of uncertainty regarding one's place in the company as well as one's future.

Regarding the comment and question above concerning San Jose; Microchip did indeed acquire Atmel recently, and it has been reported by EE Times that a group of former Atmel employees were suing Microchip over severance issues. I do not know their ages or any other details .
