Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

Any class action lawsuit for discrimination going to happen?

Like any other severance agreement you sign away all your rights to compensate from future lawsuits and relieve the company from any liabilities.

ya they definitely laid off the older employees ....husband 61, and I'm 57 and we both got chopped after 36 and 33 years of service to the company with only EXCELLENT reviews.....I'm sure they threw in some younger ones to try to make it no so obvious but it didn't work!

Good luck I hope Verizon gets burned by this!!!!!

After careful observation- new verizon HR policy is to layoff the folks with age between 40 and 50. HR think that this will protect them from violations. Just to look good, they keep someone who is close 60 without touching. We can expose such behavior with examples to EEOC.

Lowell is going to get Bitch Slapped on this one, way worse than Ivan's F**K UP, laying off 4500 Technicians in 2002. Remember that ? All the Techs had to be re-hired and back wages paid out. Wall Street is going to eat Lowell alive when the EEOC is done with all the Investigations.

To all the company patsy's saying a Class Action is fruitless. IT'S A LIE ! Regardless of signing a separation agreement, you have the right to file a complaint with the EEOC. One hour wait time, they hear your basic complaint and then decide if you have grounds. In my case they took my complaint and assigned me a case number. I then filled out paper work and mailed it in. The Federal Law preventing age discrimination supersedes anything you sign with Verizon. I strongly recommend that everyone who has been Rif'd, and feels that age and years of service prompted their dismissal, file a complaint with the EEOC. Former NYNEX has been convicted of this before in the 90's. A Class Action Law Firm will be crawling out of the wood work to find us, when the EEOC gets enough complaints and performs their own investigations. The Rif'd Management from the 90's all had to be restored to Employment with full back wages. Google the NY Times article on NYNEX Age Discrimination Law Suit. Good Luck, and file your complaints. The Severance package does not over rule your Constitutional Rights.

Will be there be any use filing a complaint with VZ internal compliance?

There is clear violation of age discrimination and immigration law. Verizon is keeping the young visa folks and forcing the older US citizens go.

agreed, the cards are too stacked against a lawsuit (and doubtful that anyone is even going to jump on it), the only thing guaranteed besides more heartache and pain is the severance. For many it is a good chunk of change, take it and parlay it into a new career path. If you are in a right to work state such as Florida, Verizon doesn't need a reason at all. It sucks but it is what it is.

No question that there was / is targeting by age, sex and race. But what is the point? It is not worth it. Time to move on.

I am 50 and let go. There are 3 more like me in my floor only. Let me know if there is any class action suit.

I believe you could say it's both age related and race related. I'm wondering if spouse's of those rif'd would be able push for the class action? They didn't sign any severance agreements with Verizon. And they are directly impacted by anything illegal that may have occurred.

I know all the folks that are gone from our building are close to 50. It is certainly age related.

In a class action for discrimination, that severance agreement may not protect Verizon.

BTW - I am over 40 as discussed in the OWBPA
